History of the Cholistan Desert
Thousands of years ago, the Cholistan region was crossed by the mighty Hakra River, believed by many historians to have been connected with the ancient Ghaggar-Hakra river system. Along its banks flourished numerous settlements that traded with the Indus Valley Civilization.
When the river gradually dried up, settlements were abandoned and the region slowly transformed into the desert seen today. Even now, archaeological surveys continue to uncover ancient pottery, fortifications and settlement sites buried beneath the sands.
