History of Lahore

Lahore is one of South Asia’s oldest cities, with a history stretching back more than a millennium. According to local tradition, it was founded by Lava (Loh), the son of Lord Rama, although its documented history begins much later.

During the Ghaznavid, Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods, Lahore became one of the greatest cities of the Islamic world. Under Emperor Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, magnificent forts, mosques, gardens and palaces transformed Lahore into the jewel of the Mughal Empire.

Later it became the capital of the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh before coming under British rule in 1849. Lahore played a central role in the Pakistan Movement, where the Lahore Resolution was adopted in 1940, paving the way for the creation of Pakistan.
