History of Skardu
Skardu has been inhabited for over a thousand years and historically formed the heart of the ancient Kingdom of Baltistan. Due to its strategic location along trade routes connecting Central Asia, Tibet, Kashmir, and Ladakh, the region became an important center for commerce and cultural exchange.
The people of Baltistan embraced Islam during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries through the influence of Muslim scholars and missionaries. Over the centuries, Skardu was ruled by local Balti kings before coming under the influence of the Dogra rulers of Jammu and Kashmir during the nineteenth century.
Following the events of 1947-48, Baltistan became part of Pakistan. Since then, Skardu has grown into the administrative and tourism center of Baltistan while preserving its unique language, traditions, architecture, and cultural heritage.
Today, Skardu is internationally recognized as the starting point for expeditions to K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Masherbrum, and many other legendary mountains.
