History of Thatta
The history of Thatta stretches back many centuries. Due to its strategic location near the Indus River and the Arabian Sea, it became an important trading centre linking South Asia with Persia, Arabia and East Africa.
During the rule of the Samma Dynasty (14th–16th centuries), Thatta emerged as the capital of Sindh and flourished as a centre of learning, architecture and commerce. It later came under the Arghuns, Tarkhans and the Mughal Empire.
When Emperor Shah Jahan visited Sindh, he commissioned the magnificent Shah Jahan Mosque, one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture in Pakistan.
Although political importance later shifted elsewhere, Thatta remains one of Pakistan’s richest historical cities.

Makli Necropolis
